Overactive Bladder

What are Common Causes/Risk Factors for Incontinence?

While age and hormonal changes are often the culprit, urinary incontinence can also be caused or aggravated by things such as:

  • Pregnancy
  • Childbirth (the risk of incontinence increases with the number of childbirths)
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Menopause
  • Impaired mobility
  • Trauma to the spine, pelvis or bladder

Women who have undergone hysterectomy may have an increased risk of UI due to the resulting anatomical changes, scar tissue and other factors.
