New DVD Helps Women Be Fit, Sexy And In Control

Every woman deserves to feel fit, sexy and in control of her own body.

That’s the theory behind a new DVD that offers education and exercises for women who want to strengthen their Pelvic Pyramid – the three muscle groups that help control the bladder, flatten the abdominals and influence sexual satisfaction.

“Total Control™ Workout: Be Fit, Be Sexy, Be in Control,” is a 90 minute video produced by the Women’s Health Foundation, a Chicago-based non-profit organization.

“The DVD has both a fitness workout and key educational topics in an included booklet,” says Missy Lavender, founder and executive director of the Foundation. “It is marketed to women who have never taken our Total Control™ class, as well as for women who have taken the program and would like a refresher.”

The Women’s Health Foundation promotes a seven-week community based fitness program called “Total Control™,” which was designed by urogynecologists, exercise physiologists and physical therapists to improve or prevent symptoms of bladder control problems. This program is currently offered at hospital wellness centers and fitness facilities in Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Arizona, Massachusetts and Illinois.

Total Control™ has already been responsible for some amazing success stories. Early research shows that after taking the class, 25 percent of participants say their bladder control issues are gone and half of the remaining participants say they are “significantly improved.”

“All of our products - the class, the DVD, and our book - have been developed to empower women and give them a new ‘lease on life,’” explains Lavender. She started the Foundation after the forceps delivery of her first child left her with an out of control bladder.  Issues around bladder and pelvic health affect nearly half of all women at some point in their lives, Lavender says, and many do not even realize that there is nothing “normal” about leaking or damp underwear.

“While we developed this program for women with serious issues, who have to wear some form of protection and therefore have changed their lives due to this problem, we are really about helping every woman feel in control,” explains Lavender. “No one should have to worry about laughing or sneezing or wonder where the nearest bathroom is because she has to go every hour.”  Women report a vast improvement in their level of control through their work with the Total Control™ exercise program.

The DVD includes a 60-minute exercise workout, 15 minutes of educational information as well as expert testimonials from doctors, current instructors and previous participants.

“Total Control™ Workout” is available in three packages: the DVD for $19.95; with the Total Control™ basic exercise equipment kit, including a six-inch rubber ball, a resistance band and a bag for $37.99; or as a premium kit with the exercise equipment. DVD and a copy of the educational primer You Go, Girl…But Only When You Want To,” for $52.99.  Prices exclude shipping and handling fees.   To order any of the aforementioned products, please visit www.totalcontrolprogram.com or call (773) 305-8204.

Women’s Health Foundation’s First Fundraiser a Success!

It was a cold and frosty night outside, but the temperature inside Ethel’s Chocolate Lounge located in Lincoln Park in Chicago was nothing but hot, hot, hot.  With warm chocolate fondue accompanied with fresh strawberries, gooey marshmallows, and scrumptious pound cake, the female attendees were all smiles with talk of their favorite earthy delights: Sex and Chocolate.

As champagne and other chocolate goodies were passed around on silver trays, the conversation was all about sex and more importantly, pleasure.  Guest speaker, Holly Herman, a world renowned Physical Therapist and lecturer, gave a black and white explanation of different positions and techniques for women to achieve powerful orgasms.  Missy Lavender, founder of Women’s Health Foundation, focused on tips and topics on how to strengthen your pelvic floor or “sex muscles” while Cheryl Sloane, owner of G-Boutique, illustrated toys and other devices that can both aid and enhance the power of the female pelvic floor.

The final speaker of the night, Chicago-based sex therapist, Elizabeth Wood, spoke on the importance of sensuality with the aid of the yummy chocolate fondue:  “It’s important for women to realize the difference between sensuality and sexuality…a woman needs to know and understand her own passions before she can share passion with her partner.”

“We’re extremely excited about the success of our very first fundraiser,” said Missy Lavender as the event was wrapping up. “Thanks to the generous support of Ethel’s Chocolate Lounge, Otherwise Incorporated, Renessa, and Pfizer, we were able to cover 100% of our cost making all ticket purchases direct contributions to the Foundation.”

Future “sex and chocolate” events are being planned for suburban Chicago and Boston.  For more information on how you can be a part of this wonderful event, go to Women’s Health Foundation at www.womenshealthfoundation.org

Women’s Health Foundation Secures Funding For Fitness DVD From Pfizer

ChicagoWomen’s Health Foundation (“WHF”) announced today the award of an unrestricted educational grant by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals to produce a fitness DVD and educational booklet of its unique program for women: Total Control, A Pelvic Wellness Program for Women.  Proven in research to flatten abs, improve sex and orgasms, better bladder control, and help women sleep comfortably through the night, Total Control™ is appropriate for women of all ages, life stages and fitness levels. The educational booklet included with the DVD will be produced in partnership with the American Urological Association Foundation and will include key tips and topics on bladder and sexual health.

Why Every Woman Needs Total Control™

The female pelvis is the epicenter of her body.  Major life events such as pregnancy and menopause challenge pelvic health and fitness and yet, traditional workout programs neglect to keep a woman fit from the inside out.  Total Control™ focuses first on three major muscle groups - front, back, and floor.  Building to a full-body strength and resistance workout, the program is designed to prevent or alleviate loss of bladder control, improve a woman’s sex life, and enhance posture and balance.

The bonus educational booklet teaches women important behavior management and lifestyle modifications to potentially prevent loss of bladder control.  Educational topics include basic pelvic anatomy, nutrition and the bladder, and Potty Training 2.0.  “It is shocking how many women are completely in the dark about basic changes they can make that will dramatically improve symptoms and enhance their quality of life.  We are so excited to move beyond group classes and share this information with thousands of women who want to be in Total Control!” says Missy Lavender, Executive Director and Founder of the Women’s Health Foundation.

Total ControlDVDs will be available for purchase in 2Q, 2007.  To preorder, contact Molly Kirk at 773-305-8201 or at molly@womenshealthfoundation.org.  Group Total Control™ classes are currently being offered in Denver, Boston, and the Chicagoland area.  Visit www.womenshealthfoundation.org for more information on Total Control™ classes, bladder tips, and other pelvic health related topics.

New Interactive Mythbusting Website Connects Women with Bladder Researchers

Chicago - A new interactive Website offers women down-to-earth information about what may be one of the last “taboo” personal issues: bladder problems. In addition, a bladder control survey on the website will fill a void in U.S. medical research data on the subject.

In a society full of advertisements for Viagra, it’s hard to imagine that more than 25 million Americans are suffering in silence with any condition – but it’s true. Studies show that women who experience urinary leakage or overactive bladder urges wait an average of six to seven years–even while experiencing symptoms weekly–before mentioning it to their doctors.

The silence is deafening, especially in the U.S., where researchers have found data scarce and hard to come by. Most large scale studies on bladder problems have been conducted in Europe where nationalized health care makes it easier to obtain data. Here at home, embarrassment over bladder issues not only stops women from getting the help that they need with a common and often easily controlled problem but has resulted in a dearth of research data.

Now a new website by the Women’s Health Foundation, supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Pfizer, aims to change all that by allowing women to access much needed information in the privacy of their own home. The site offers easy-to-understand descriptions of common types of bladder dysfunction, their causes, treatments and simple lifestyle and nutritional tips to avoid problems. Did you know that ketchup, salad dressing and soy sauce can cause trouble with bladder function?

The site also offers a lighthearted and down-to-earth, interactive game called “The Road to Control” in which players guide a youthful, active woman through a bladder control survey “obstacle course.” Participants earn a free wristband by completing the ten minute survey-game. Sharp graphics and the appealing game format engage players to learn more about this common problem, challenge myths about bladder control problems (this is NOT just your grandma’s issue), and is designed to provide U.S. medical researchers with much needed data about the population of women out there suffering in silence.

In addition to providing information and collecting data, the site also delivers a third, much needed benefit to visitors: HOPE. New research being undertaken at Loyola University, in conjunction with the Women’s Health Foundation, found that targeted fitness classes aimed at improving pelvic floor function, such as “Total Control™,” can vastly improve bladder problems in many women.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital Offers Total Control™
a Total Body Fitness and Lifestyle Class Focusing on Pelvic Wellness

More than just Kegels, this exercise and education program teaches women to isolate and activate key pelvic support muscles to achieve better sex lives, sleep and bladder control

CHICAGO – Some type of bladder or pelvic dysfunction will afflict 80 percent of women in their lifetime, and 40 percent of childbearing women will suffer the affects of muscle-related incontinence. Now, Northwestern Memorial’s Prentice Women’s Hospital is offering these women a powerful, unique new workout class designed to help women to improve their sex lives, get better sleep and stop bladder control problems like leaking and frequent urges. It’s called Total Control™: A Wellness Program for Women.

Total Control™, developed by the Women’s Health Foundation, is a medically based, no-impact, total body workout aimed at developing fitness from the inside out. This biweekly class runs for seven weeks and women learn to isolate the three key support muscles for the spine and pelvis that make up the Pelvic Pyramid: the pelvic floor, the transverse abdominals, and the multifidus. The exercises – more than just Kegels – are designed to locate, activate and tone key muscles for overall pelvic health.

“Total Control™ is designed with all women in mind, but especially those who have children, are perimenopausal or menopausal, have had pelvic surgery or are starting a major weight loss routine,” explains Janet Tomezsko, MD, director, Urogynecology, Northwestern Memorial Hospital. “Preliminary studies of this exercise class indicate that women, by strengthening their core muscles and improving function in the pelvic region, will improve their ability to sleep through the night, minimize or alleviate bladder control problems, and tighten their vaginal walls to improve sexual pleasure.”

Results from a recent study showed that half of patients reported an improvement in quality of life after completing the program. Twenty-five percent reported that their stress incontinence symptoms were alleviated by the program’s end.
The impetus for Total Control™ came when Missy Lavender, founder and president of the Women’s Health Foundation, was unwilling to settle with the state of her pelvic health after the forceps delivery of her second child. “In researching my own treatment, I became aware of the limited number of treatment options. Considering there are millions of women out there in my situation, I wanted to bring them an innovative wellness program.” The program was designed by a team of physical therapists, urogynecologists and other women’s health experts, including Northwestern Memorial’s Dr. Tomezsko.

The program provides a total body workout, appropriate for all ages and fitness levels. Additionally, emphasis is placed on identifying, isolating and working the muscles of the Pelvic Pyramid. Education is provided on topics such as pelvic and bladder anatomy, the value of nutrition, and lifestyle tips to prevent, manage or alleviate symptoms of leakage, frequency or urge. Participants also receive a copy of the book “Bladder Control is No Accident” and a Myself™ home pelvic floor trainer.

“For millions of Americans, incontinence is not just a medical problem. It is a problem that also affects their emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Many women are afraid to participate in normal daily activities that might take them too far from a restroom,” said Dr. Tomezsko. “The goal of this class is to help women control this problem through exercise and lifestyle changes, potentially for some, helping them to avoid surgery in the future.”

Interested participants may call (877) 926-4664 to enroll.

DesChutes Medical Products, Inc. donates award winning pelvic fitness trainers to Women’s Health Foundation for YMCA classes.

Total Control™ class touts better sex, better sleep and better bladder control

DENVER: Women enrolling in YMCA classes designed to target and tone pelvic muscles will get a pleasant surprise this January as Oregon-based DesChutes Medical Products, Inc. has committed to giving each and every one of them a free MYSELF® biofeedback pelvic muscle training kit. The kits retail for about $90 each at most local drug stores.

Five Denver METRO AREA YMCAs are currently taking registrations for a unique pelvic health fitness class designed for women of all ages called Total Control™. Like the MYSELF® device, Total Control™ is designed to help women improve their sex lives, get better sleep and stop bladder control problems like leaking or frequent urges.

The YMCA medically-based fitness program is a biweekly class that runs for 7 weeks in which women learn to isolate the three pelvic muscles that make up the Pelvic Pyramid, and tone them so that they are stronger, more flexible and better coordinated. Preliminary studies of this exercise class indicate that women, by strengthening their “core” muscles and increasing blood flow in the pelvic region, improve their ability to sleep through the night, tighten their vaginal walls to improve sexual pleasure, and minimize or alleviate bladder control problems.

Thanks to DesChutes, these women will now be able to continue their exercises at home, without an instructor, using the MYSELF® pelvic training device. The device helps the user identify the key muscles, and then measures contractions in both long and short muscles to ensure maximal toning. Previously available only by prescription, the MYSELF® training device has been clinically tested with 79 percent of the women participating finding an improvement in their bladder control problems, and a whopping 44 percent of the participants cured.

Both DesChutes (www.DependOnMyself.com) and the creators of Total Control™ (www.womenshealthfoundation.org) hope that a combination of the two programs will prove an unbeatable combination in strengthening and toning pelvic core muscles.
