Fibroids

What are Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors which grow from the muscle layers of the uterus. Approximately 70% of Caucasian women and 80% of African American women have fibroids; in about 25% of while and 50% of black women they become symptomatic. Uterine fibroids are also more common in overweight women.

Uterine fibroids often do not require treatment, but when they become problematic, they may be treated with hormones, medication, non-surgical or if severe, with surgery. The most common uterine fibroids symptoms include:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Prolonged menstrual periods or bleeding between periods
  • Pelvic pressure or pain
  • Urinary incontinence or frequent urination
  • Constipation
  • Backache or leg pains

Because fibroids are reactive to estrogen cycles, they may shrink dramatically in size after a woman passes through menopause.
