Anatomy of the Pelvis
Anatomy of the Pelvis
They say good things come in small packages, and your pelvic region houses a lot of complex parts in a small area.
The bony structure of the pelvis contains your uterus, bladder, intestines and rectum organs, as well as layers of muscles, connective tissue and a rich nerve system. The muscular base of the pelvis, known as the pelvic floor, or levator ani muscles, is actually a hammock-like group of muscles running from the pubic bone in the front, to the tailbone in back, and side to side. Your pelvic floor is responsible for supporting your urethra, vagina, bladder and anus.

A healthy pelvic floor will help keep these “exit” organs working properly, or tightening when you need to hold waste in and relaxing when you want to let it out. Maintaining a strong and healthy pelvic region can also improve continence and enhance spinal alignment (thus reducing back pain). Regular exercise of the pelvic floor muscles also increases blood flow to the pelvic area, leading to sexual benefits such as increased or stronger orgasms!
Pelvic Pyramid
Helping to support the pelvic floor are other muscles in the same region, such as your transverse abdominals (TVA) and multifidus muscles that run along your lower to middle spine. These three muscle groups--the pelvic floor, the TVA (front), and the multifidus (back)--form your Pelvic Pyramid.

A strong and healthy pelvic floor can enhance your quality of life, prevent or reduce issues of bladder loss, and even improve your posture and flatten your stomach. Increased blood flow to the pelvic area can even lead to sexual benefits such as increased orgasms!
